Microsoft Surface Book 3

What are the Best Convertible Laptops in 2022?

This is yet again another impressive Microsoft release, although there isn’t much difference between Book 2 and Book 3. The Microsoft Surface Book 3 has a magnesium casing exterior with a signature platinum color finish.

Visually, Book 3 is very identical to Book 2 as the USB ports remain the same and the distinct hinge is still present. Although many persons consider this unique hinge a great turn-off, Microsoft says its purpose is to prevent the entire system from toppling over as the battery and processor are in the touchpad.

Speaking of the battery, Book 3 has a separate battery on the screen although it barely lasts up to 4 hours. On average, the battery life of Book 3 in standard tests is about 9 hours. You can get better mileage, depending on the workload.

The Surface Book 3 offers two different sizes including the 13” and 15” models. For the 13” variant, you have the option of picking the lower-priced model with a Core i5 processor featuring integrated Intel Iris Plus Graphics or going for the higher-priced model with a 10th Generation Intel Core i7 CPU coupled with an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 GPU. The 15” model has an i7 CPU paired with the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660Ti GPU.

Storage options include 1TB SSD, 512GB SSD, 256 GB SSD for the 13” model, whereas the 15” model is equipped with a 2TB SSD. In terms of hardware, Book 3 offers solid performance in business applications and general computing.

It also makes a wonderful laptop rather than a tablet, because of the many compromises it has in its tablet mode, one of which is the battery life. Another plus is the thickness of the stand-alone tablet and finally, the lack of a cover or kickstand for the screen.

This makes Book 3 quite uncomfortable to use on the couch, as you might need to get creative to get the convertible to stand upright. Despite its already expensive price tag, Microsoft also doesn’t include a surface pen in the Book 3 standard package therefore, you would have to spend some more to get one.

Despite its many compromises, the Book 3 is still a very impressive convertible with its RAM ranging from 8GB to 32GB of memory, 13.5-inch or 15” display, and 3000×2000 resolution which accounts for crisp images and graphics.

The keyboard is also very comfortable to use with the keys well-spaced and the trackpad, though small, is very responsive.

For its size, Book 3 is also satisfactorily powerful and it’s a perfect description of ‘Power at a Price.’

Asus Chromebook Flip C434

What are the Best Convertible Laptops

The Flip C434 is certainly a big improvement from its predecessor, Chromebook Flip C302 CA, as it has a couple of more enticing features such as a larger display screen, longer battery life, and solid performance. It is priced on Amazon at $561.66 and has the reputation of being one of the best convertible laptops that you can buy at that price.

The Flip C434 could easily be mistaken for a pricier laptop, with its sleek matte silver aluminum chassis. The exterior design wouldn’t exactly take your breath away, but it is definitely elegant for its price.

The silver exterior extends to its keypad and it also has a touchpad, volume, and power buttons. Its 360-degree hinges allow you to flip from the traditional clamshell laptop mode to tent mode and then to a tablet. For a convertible with a 14-inch display screen, the Flip C424 is slim and amazingly lightweight.

However, its featherweight and aluminum chassis also has a downside to it, as the Flip C434 is the least durable of all the popular Chromebooks. The laptop can suffer severe damage to its chassis, touchpad, and screen when dropped from an altitude hence, you would have to be extra cautious with its handling.

The base model has an Intel Core M3 8100Y CPU, 4GB RAM, and 64GB hardware storage. The ports available on the Flip C434 are also not many, but it has all the essentials. On the right, there is a Type C USB port and a micro SD card slot. While on the left, there is a USB 3.1 Type-A port, a second USB-C port, and lastly a headphone jack.

The 1920×1080 resolution display is also bright and sharp. The backlit keyboard offers a satisfactory typing experience with just enough tactile response, and the audio speakers are just as amazing. The icing on the cake of the Flip C434 is the battery life which can last as long as 10 hours on a single charge.

Lenovo Yoga C940

What are the Best Convertible Laptops

Priced at $1,189 on Amazon, the Yoga C940 is a 14-inch convertible laptop that offers a better typing experience, a larger screen, improved audio quality, and impressive battery life. Exteriorly donned in an aluminum chassis, it is available in two shades: the deep iron-gray and a light silvery grey that Lenovo popularly refers to as Mica.

If you have a flair for classic convertibles, you might be thrilled by the latter. However, if you prefer a more rogue look, the deep iron grey shade would definitely suit your fancy.

The base model has an Intel Core i5 CPU, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, and a 1920×1080 resolution screen. Though the display is vivid and sharp, it is quite reflective. With its 12.6×8.5×0.6-dimension size, the Yoga C490 tops the scale at 3.02 pounds.

It also comes with efficient security features such as the 720p webcam privacy shutter and the responsive fingerprint scanner. The webcam, however, lacks the IR sensors required for Windows Hello face recognition, but the fingerprint scanner certainly makes up for that.

It also has a 360-degree hinge and solid keys that provide a satisfying click. It also comes with an active stylus that has 4096 degrees of pressure, with an in-built holder. The touchpad is also very smooth in sliding operations, but it becomes a bit stiff when clicking at its top.

Moving on to the audio, the quality is excellent with an outward-projecting grille. Quite unlike most other convertible laptops, the speaker grille is on the hinge of the laptop hence, the sound always projects outward and comes out loud, irrespective of the mode the laptop is placed in.

All ports are also on the left side of the chassis and they include a USB 3.1 Type-A port, two USB Type C ports with Thunderbolt 3, and a headphone jack.

One of the downsides to this one-sided port design is the absence of a micro SD card slot and due to its internal buildup, the Yoga C490 is also not easily upgradeable.
