Top 10 Best Convertible Laptops in 2021

Having compared the different convertible laptop models, let’s now consider our top-10 pick in more detail.

LG Gram 14

Top 10 Best Convertible Laptops in 2021

After several not-too-satisfactory laptop models, LG has proven that it can craft a laptop as good as any, with the release of the Gram 14. The Gram 14 convertible 2-in-1 laptop has a featherweight chassis, with great battery life. If you are keen on a lightweight laptop with a not-too-large display, then the Gram 14 is just what you need as it has a 14-inch display. Despite the fact that the chassis of the Gram 14 is very light, it has military-grade durability as the laptop can survive harsh conditions such as shock, varying temperatures, dust, and exposure to low pressure.

The Gram 14 has a dark gray magnesium alloy surface, which gains the credit for its lightweight. On the lid of the Gram 14, is a tiny “Gram” logo imprinted in lower case letters with a beautiful chrome material. Generally, the Gram 14 has a rather bland design that isn’t stylish, but simple and understated. It weighs 2.5 pounds and offers a 1920×1080 display, an Intel Core i7 10510U CPU, and 16GB of RAM. Also, it has a 360-degree hinge which seemed quite sturdy at first but eventually proved no difficulty when pushed back. Being a convertible laptop, it can fold into the traditional clamshell laptop model, and can as well be positioned in a tent mode. The faults of the LG Gram 14 are however its awful speakers and lofty price tag.

The dual speakers at the bottom of the Gram 14 have proven to be its weakest feature. However, the battery life can be said to make up for this lack, as the Gram 14 has 20.5 hours of battery life. LG also included an active stylus pen which is also called Wacom AES 2.0. The stylus is not only comfortable but also has 4096 levels of pressure. As such, you can draw accurate lines with it. Judging by the increasing rate of remote jobs available, you also don’t have to bother as the webcam of the Gram 14 is decent enough for video calls.

Moving now to USB ports, on the left side of the Gram 14 is a USB 3.1 Type-A port, an HDMI 2.0 port, and a Thunderbolt 3 input. On the right side, there is another 3.1 USB port, a lock slot, a headphone jack, and a micro SD card slot. The Gram 14 keypad is also adequate as all the caps are in black, with letters and numbers in white font. Also, locating shortcut commands on the keyboard wouldn’t be a challenge as they are marked with orange font. Though the keys could be less stiff, they still provide that satisfying, snappy bump when pressed down and released.

All-in-all, the Gram 14 is certainly one of the best choices in our top 10 best Convertible Laptops in 2021 roundup, and is definitely a massive step up for LG, offering a satisfactory viewing experience without compromising on battery life.

We take 12 Workstation Laptops for a spin in this rundown of the best Lappies for CAD

HP ZBook Studio X360 G5

Top 10 Best Convertible Laptops in 2021

The Studio X360 is the ultimate convertible 2-in-1 workstation, which strikes a perfect balance between productivity and entertainment. The workstation is stylish with a silver-grey exterior and an aluminum lid, which bears the HP signature logo. It has a 15.6-inch UHD display, Intel Core i7-8750H CPU, 8GB RAM, up to 2TB SSD, and lots of connectivity options.

The graphics is handled by the capable NVIDIA Quadro P1000, a discrete GPU with 4GB VRAM. There’s also the integrated Intel® UHD graphics 630 for additional graphics performance. The dual graphics hardware can be switched using the included NVIDIA Optimus technology.

The Quadro P1000 is a workstation-class GPU, capable of delivering outstanding graphics performance in professional applications such as CAD and GPU rendering. So if you are an engineer and want something that will run your CAD applications on the move, this is your machine. besides, it is ISV certified to provide fast and reliable performance with workstation applications, including manipulation of 3D textures.

The Studio X360 can also withstand vibration, shock, extreme temperatures, and other physical hazards due to its superior engineering. This is because it is MIL-STD 810G certified. This means you can rest assured that this machine will perform reliably in extreme conditions.

It weighs 4.9 pounds and has a size of 14.2×10×0.74 inches. On the left side of the workstation, there are two USB-A 3.0 ports, a security lock slot, the power button, and an optional SIM card slot. While on the right, there are two Thunderbolt 3 ports – which happen to be one of its highlights, an HDMI video output, an audio jack, an SD card slot, and the AC adapter connector. Speaking on its trade-offs now, the Studio X360 has no place to store the stylus pen, loose hinges, and poor webcam imagery, which provides images with just about 720 pixels.

However, HP provided a plastic clip for the stylus which snaps into the SD card slot to keep it in place. Over to the keyboard now; it lacks a numeric pad and the backlit keys are a bit shallow. However, they are quite satisfactory. The touchpad also glides and taps smoothly and its touch screen operators are precise, but it has no buttons on it. The stylus pen is also very effective, with a USB Type C port for charging which means it doesn’t need a battery.

The Studio X360 also has a stunning display with ample brightness, broad viewing angles, and vivid colors. The audio is also pleasant with a loud, clear sound. The battery life can also last up to about 9 hours and for a workstation with such hardware, the Studio X369 doesn’t get crazy hot.

Microsoft Surface Go 2

Top 10 Best Convertible Laptops in 2021

The Surface Go 2 is a Windows tablet about the size of an 11-inch iPad Pro. The only significant difference between the Surface Go 2 and its original model, is the increase in screen size. The Go 2 though with gently curving corners, is solidly built with a Dual-Core Intel Core m3 processor. The tablet has a pretty impressive kickstand that works just fine, irrespective of the angle at which it is positioned.

Also, the Surface Go 2 has a micro SD card slot that allows for more storage, a surface connector, a Type C USB port, and a headphone jack. The camera which is located on top of the screen seems to be one of the few features the Surface Go 2 can boast of, as the imagery appears great especially on video conferencing. It also has a 10-inch display which is quite small compared to other convertible laptops, 1800×1200 resolution, 128GB SSD storage, and 8GB memory.

The Surface Go 2 is sadly also very slow and lags behind greatly, especially when too many apps are run at the same time, or an app that is too intense is being run. The battery life is average, as it can clock up to 10 hours in standard usage scenarios. The keyboard pad is also too flexible and sometimes doesn’t stay put at an angle when you press down on it.

With the keyboard included, the Surface Go 2 costs about $730 and though it still requires lots of upgrades, it is definitely an improvement compared to the original Surface Go as it offers more space and better camera imagery.

Microsoft Surface Go 2 Key Technical Specifications

HP Elite Dragonfly

Top 10 Best Convertible Laptops in 2021

The Dragonfly is simply one of the best business laptops you can get on the market. When it was released, people almost couldn’t believe it was a business laptop, as it has an alluring exterior that one could easily liken to the traditional laptop.

The chassis gives one an illusion of a typical midnight sky, with its stunning blue magnesium exterior and glossy white HP logo at the center. You also wouldn’t have to bother about maintaining the exterior, as it is stain-resistant and easy to wipe due to its oleophobic coating.

The convertible laptop is not only sleek but also offers excellent security features with its fingerprint scanner and IR camera, which is used for facial recognition to log in to Windows Hello. The gorgeous chassis is also durable as it has been made to undergo several MIL-SPEC durability tests, and as such can withstand external hazards. It also has two 360-degree hinges that allow you to conveniently switch between the clamshell laptop model and the tablet.

There are two models to choose from – the i5 and i7 models. The i5 model is priced lower while the i7 model is priced higher. You have either 8GB or 16GB of RAM, a 1920×1080 resolution touch panel, and a 13.3 inches display screen. This and many more features account for the solid performance and rich display of the Dragonfly.

It also has a feather weight chassis of 2.5 pounds and 11.9×7.8×0.6-inch dimensions. Moving on to ports now, on the right side of the laptop, there is a HDMI 1.4 port, two Thunderbolt 3 ports and a headphone jack. While on the left, there is a USB 3.1 Type A Port, a nano SIM card slot and the power button.

The Dragonfly also has an optional stylus pen that has 4,096 points of pressure, and offers precise drawing lines. You also wouldn’t have to bother about getting an AAA battery as the stylus is rechargeable, with a USB Type C slot.

One of the downsides of the Dragonfly, however, is its audio. The audio certainly requires more improvement, as the speakers and smart amplifiers do not offer as much bass as one would have wanted. It is quite poor, to say the least.

This is yet again another impressive Microsoft release, although there isn’t much difference between the Book 2 and Book 3. The Microsoft Surface Book 3 has a magnesium casing exterior with the signature platinum color finish.

Visually, the Book 3 is very identical to the Book 2 as the USB ports remain the same and the distinct hinge is still present. Although many persons consider this unique hinge a great turn-off, Microsoft says its purpose is to prevent the entire system from toppling over as the battery and processor are in the touchpad.

Speaking of the battery, the Book 3 has a separate battery in the screen although it barely lasts up to 4 hours. On an average, the battery life of the Book 3 in standard tests is about 9 hours. You can get better mileage, depending on the workload.

The Surface Book 3 offers two different sizes including the 13” and 15” models. For the 13” variant, you have the option of picking the lower-priced model with a Core i5 processor featuring integrated Intel Iris Plus Graphics or go for the higher priced model with a 10th Generation Intel Core i7 CPU coupled with an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 GPU. The 15” model has an i7 CPU paired with the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660Ti GPU

Storage options include 1TB SSD, 512GB SSD, 256GB SSD for the 13” model, whereas the 15” model is equipped with a 2TB SSD. In terms of hardware, the Book 3 offers solid performance in business applications and general computing.

It also makes a wonderful laptop rather than a tablet, because of the many compromises it has in its tablet mode, one of which is the battery life. Another plus is the thickness of the stand-alone tablet and finally, the lack of a cover or kickstand for the screen.

This makes the Book 3 quite uncomfortable to use on the couch, as you might need to get creative to get the convertible to stand upright. Despite its already expensive price tag, Microsoft also doesn’t include a surface pen in the Book 3 standard package therefore, you would have to spend some more to get one.

Despite its many compromises, the Book 3 is still a very impressive convertible with its RAM ranging from 8GB to 32GB of memory, 13.5-inch or 15” display, and 3000×2000 resolution which accounts for crisp images and graphics. The keyboard is also very comfortable to use with the keys well-spaced and the trackpad, though small, is very responsive.

For its size, the Book 3 is also satisfactorily powerful and it’s a perfect description of ‘Power at a Price.’

Asus Chromebook Flip C434

Top 10 Best Convertible Laptops in 2021

The Flip C434 is certainly a big improvement from its predecessor, Chromebook Flip C302 CA, as it has a couple of more enticing features such as a larger display screen, longer battery life, and solid performance. It is priced at Amazon for $561.66 and has the reputation of being one of the best convertible laptops that you can buy at that price. The Flip C434 could easily be mistaken for a pricier laptop, with its sleek matte silver aluminum chassis. The exterior design wouldn’t exactly take your breath away, but it is definitely elegant for its price.

The silver exterior extends to its keypad and it also has a touchpad, volume, and power buttons. Its 360-degree hinges allow you flip from the traditional clamshell laptop model to the tent mode and then to a tablet. For a convertible with a 14-inch display screen, the Flip C424 is slim and amazingly lightweight. However, its featherweight and aluminum chassis also has a downside to it, as the Flip C434 is the least durable of all the popular Chromebooks. The laptop can suffer severe damage to its chassis, touchpad, and screen when dropped from an altitude hence, you would have to be extra cautious with its handling.

The base model has an Intel Core M3 8100Y CPU, 4GB RAM, and 64GB hardware storage. The ports available on the Flip C434 are also not many, but it has all the essentials. On the right, there is a Type C USB port and a micro SD card slot. While on the left, there is a USB 3.1 Type-A port, a second USB-C port, and lastly a headphone jack. The 1920×1080 resolution display is also bright and sharp. The backlit keyboard offers a satisfactory typing experience with just enough tactile response, and the audio speakers are just as amazing. The icing on the cake of the Flip C434 is the battery life which can last as long as 10 hours on a single charge.

Asus Chromebook Flip Key Technical Specifications

CPU Intel Core i7 8500Y
GPU Intel UHD Graphics
Size 12.6×8×0.6 inches
Display 14 inches, 1920×1080 pixels
Storage 64GB eMMC
Battery Life 10 Hours
Weight 3.2 Pounds
RAM 4GB

PROS

  • Stunning design
  • Long battery life
  • Lightweight

CONS

  • Not durable

Lenovo Yoga C940

Top 10 Best Convertible Laptops in 2021

Priced at $1,189 on Amazon, the Yoga C940 is a 14-inch convertible laptop that offers better typing experience, a larger screen, improved audio quality, and impressive battery life. Exteriorly donned in an aluminum chassis, it is available in two shades: the deep iron-gray and a light silvery grey that Lenovo popularly refers to as Mica. If you have a flair for classic convertibles, you might be thrilled by the latter. However, if you prefer a more rogue look, the deep iron grey shade would definitely suit your fancy.

The base model has an Intel Core i5 CPU, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, and a 1920×1080 resolution screen. Though the display is vivid and sharp, it is quite reflective. With its 12.6×8.5×0.6-dimension size, the Yoga C490 tops the scale at 3.02 pounds. It also comes with efficient security features such as the 720p webcam privacy shutter and the responsive fingerprint scanner. The webcam, however, lacks the IR sensors required for Windows Hello face recognition, but the fingerprint scanner certainly makes up for that.

It also has a 360-degree hinge and solid keys that provide a satisfying click. It also comes with an active stylus that has 4096 degrees of pressure, with an in-built holder. The touchpad is also very smooth in sliding operations, but it becomes a bit stiff when clicking at its top. Moving on to the audio, the quality is excellent with an outward-projecting grille. Quite unlike most other convertible laptops, the speaker grille is on the hinge of the laptop hence, the sound always projects outward and comes out loud, irrespective of the mode the laptop is placed in.

All ports are also on the left side of the chassis and they include a USB 3.1 Type-A port, two USB Type C ports with Thunderbolt 3, and a headphone jack. One of the downsides to this one-sided port design is the absence of a micro SD card slot and due to its internal buildup, the Yoga C490 is also not easily upgradable.

Lenovo Yoga C940 Key Technical Specifications

CPU Intel Core i7 1065G7
GPU Intel Iris Plus Graphics
Size 12.6×8.5×0.6 inches
Display 14 inches, 1920×1080 pixels
Storage 512GB SSD
Battery Life 13 Hours
Weight 3.02 Pounds
RAM 12GB

PROS

  • Excellent audio quality
  • Added security features
  • Built-in stylus holder
  • Sharp display

CONS

  • Reflective display
  • No webcam face recognition

Microsoft Surface Pro 7

Top 10 Best Convertible Laptops in 2021

The Microsoft Surface Pro 7 takes a massive step up from its predecessor by offering a stronger performance and a better port system but unfortunately, an unimpressive battery life. If you want a convertible laptop that has a detachable keyboard, then the Pro 7 is definitely what you need as the type cover attaches to the underside of the touchpad seamlessly. It also gives the Pro 7 an alluring appearance, especially in the burgundy color model. If you are not a fan of color pop, you don’t have to bother, as the type cover is also available in black, platinum, and cobalt blue.

Moving away from the detachable keyboard now, the Pro 7 is also a stunning convertible available in either black or platinum. Simply put, it is more like a tablet that can easily convert to a laptop, with the help of its kickstand and detachable keyboard. The kickstand rotates from 0 degrees to about 160, making it possible to prop up the touchpad to the height of a traditional laptop screen, and can also be used at lower altitudes when taking notes. As against the conventional design in most of the other convertibles, there is an optional surface pen that can attach to the side of the Pro 7 touchpad magnetically.

Furthermore, unlike its predecessor, the Pro 7 finally comes with the much anticipated USB-C port. However, it is a USB 3.1 and not Thunderbolt 3 and the Type C port also can’t be used to charge the system, but half cake is better than none, don’t you think? It also comes with a Type A USB port, a headphone jack, a Surface connect port, and lastly a micro SD card slot. With a 12.3-inch, 2736×1824 display, the Pro 7 also offers rich and colorful visuals. The keys are also well-spaced and provide just the right amount of tactile feedback.

The Pro 7 also has some downsides to it though; its estimated 0.5 inch bezels are too thick for a modern-day tablet/laptop. The keyboard being detachable and way lighter than the touchpad also makes the setup in laptop mode quite wobbly. Plus, the detachable keyboard and surface pen are not included in the standard Pro 7 package – you would need to buy them separately. Amidst all the compromises, the Pro 7 is certainly one of the best convertible laptops you can buy around with a crisp display and solid performance.

Microsoft Surface Pro 7 Key Technical Specifications

CPU 10th Gen Intel Core i3, i5, i7
GPU Intel UHD
Size 11.5×7.9×0.3 inches
Display 12.3 inches, 2736×1824 pixels
Storage 128GB
Battery Life 10.5 Hours
Weight 1.7 Pounds
RAM 4GB

PROS

  • USB Type C port
  • Excellent detachable keyboard
  • Sharp display

CONS

  • Poor battery life
  • Low-quality speakers

Dell XPS 15

Top 10 Best Convertible Laptops in 2021

The Dell XPS 15 is yet again another impressive breakout into the convertible 2-in-1 laptops space. It has a metallic exterior topped with a silvery finish, which has become more or less the signature Dell design. This repetitive, basic design makes the chassis appear quite unimpressive and even its very comfortable palm rests do not make up for that lack. The palm rest is comfortable thanks to its faux carbon fiber finishing, and although they are prone to fingerprints, they are surprisingly very easy to clean.

The XPS 15 offers both power and great value for your money, although it lacks greatly in the portability sector. This is due to its 4.5 pounds of weight and what’s a bit disappointing about this is the lack of the Type A USB port. One would expect that for a convertible that weighty, there should have at least been a provision for the Type-A port. It however only comes with two USB C Thunderbolt 3 ports, another two USB C 3.1 ports, an audio jack, lock slot, and micro SD card slot. With a maximum resolution of 1920×1080 pixels though, the XPS 15 certainly offers sharp visuals, enough brightness, and color pop.

The convertible, despite its weight, surprisingly has very thin bezels and this is the primary reason for the awkward webcam placement. The IR camera is found at the base of the display screen, under the Dell logo and due to its placement, the image angling in video calls is quite disturbing. On to the brighter side now, the power button has an in-built fingerprint scanner and the webcam also carries out facial recognition for increased security.

The trackpad also, though small, is smooth and accurate although the keyboard does not give as much satisfaction, as the keys are shallow and the backlit feature isn’t bright enough. The XPS 15 also has a sturdy hinge that doesn’t make the screen wobbly. While trying to open the laptop casually, the sturdy hinge could also be quite stiff. However, with a 15.6-inch display screen and over 15 hours of battery life, the XPS 15 is certainly a satisfactory convertible.

Dell XPS 15 Key Technical Specifications

CPU Intel Core i7 8705G
GPU AMD Radeon RX Vega M
Size 13.9×9.2× 0.6 inches
Display 15.6 inches, 1920×1080 pixels
Storage 512GB SSD
Battery Life 9 Hours +
Weight 4.5 Pounds
RAM 16GB

PROS

  • Sound build
  • Epic battery life

CONS

  • No USB Type A port
  • Weighty
  • Bland design
  • Shallow keys

HP Spectre X360

Top 10 Best Convertible Laptops in 2021

At last! The best saved for the last. The HP Spectre X360 made a massive and stunning impression at its release, with so many highlights to it. With its modern chassis, striking design, and thin display bezels, the X360 is definitely one of the most beautiful laptops you can buy, with no compromises whatsoever made to accommodate its thin bezels. It also offers a sharp display, long battery life, a comfortable keyboard, fast performance, and an included active stylus.

It has a silver exterior with a stylish HP logo in a chrome finish, beautifully gracing its lid. It also has a silver keyboard deck with transparent key fonts, and for those that might consider this a bland combo, HP offers other available color finishes.

It also has a 360-degree hinge that allows you conveniently switch in between modes, from studio to tent and then to laptop. The hinge is also sturdy and does a good job of preventing the touchpad from wobbling. One of the major highlights of the X360 is the presence of the USB-A port, and here’s how HP was able to pull that off.

With a clever drop-jaw design mechanism on the side, the Type-A port can conveniently expand to accommodate a full USB 3.1 cable. Speaking about ports, the X360 also has a headphone jack, two Thunderbolt 3 ports, and a micro SD card slot.

Another striking highlight is the ample position of the webcam, unlike the awkward positioning of that of the Dell XPS 15. HP was also able to make this possible, by manufacturing the world’s smallest IR webcam with a diameter of 2.2mm, which sits comfortably at the top of the display screen, despite the thin bezels.

There are also two display options available with the X360: the 13.3-inch, 1080p display, and the 4K OLED screen. One would think at first that there would be a great contrast between the two, but there were no complaints whatsoever with the former as it provides a vivid display with sufficient brightness for outdoor usage.

The keys are also large and well-spaced however, having transparent key fonts on a silver keyboard wasn’t such a clever move, as they are not quite distinguishable. The speakers, now bottom-firing, also didn’t deliver as much quality as would have been preferred. Definitely, our list of top 10 best Convertible Laptops in 2021 wouldn’t be complete without the X360.

HP Spectre X360 Key Technical Specifications

CPU Intel Core i5 1035 / Intel Core i7-7500U
GPU Intel HD Graphics 520/Intel HD Graphics 620
Size 12.1×7.7× 0.6 inches
Display 13.3 inches, 1920×1080 pixels
Storage 256GB SSD
Battery Life 9 Hours +
Weight 2.7 Pounds
RAM 8GB

PROS

  • Beautiful design
  • Thin bezels
  • USB-A port

CONS

  • Soft speakers
  • Heats up while running

Top 10 Best Convertible Laptops in 2021 Buying Guide

There are many reasons why people opt for a convertible laptop today but the most important of all the plausible reasons is the freedom to switch between the traditional clamshell laptop to that of a tablet. When you want to get professional work done that requires the operation of some desktop applications alongside the usage of the keyboard, you can take advantage of the laptop model. However, if you just want to relax to watch a movie or perhaps play a game then, you can switch to the tablet mode.

Choosing the right convertible laptop that would suit your unique requirements could however be a hassle, and that is why we have put together some key factors to consider before making your choice. Let’s get straight into them.

Your Budget

With the numerous convertible laptops on the market today, there should definitely be one that fits into your intended budget. The prices range from about $200 all the way up to over $2,000, and typically the higher the specifications of the convertible (battery life, resolution, size, storage, etc.), the higher the price. So eventually it all boils down to how much sacrifice you are willing to make price-wise, for the features you want.

Display Size

Before making your choice, you might also want to put the size of the convertible’s display into consideration. You can get convertibles available in various sizes ranging all the way from 10 inches to 15 inches. Most people typically opt for smaller display sizes because of their portability. If you are a student and you basically need something small that you can easily shuttle from your home to school, then you should probably opt for a smaller size because they are portable and less weighty. However, if you are a business person and you want a large screen to make presentations without the use of projector screens, then you should consider the larger sizes with the likes of Dell XPS 15.

Hinge Style

Convertible laptops usually come in two major hinge styles: rotating Hinge or detachable Hinge. If you hardly use the keyboard and prefer the touch-only user interface better, then you should probably go for the detachable hinge style. However, if you type more and generally prefer using the trackpad to navigate your way through, then a convertible with a rotating hinge would suit you better. The rotating ones usually have 360-degree hinges, so you can easily switch between various modes (laptop, tent, and tablet).

Specifications

You should also look out for your unique system requirements in the convertible laptop. Technical specifications such as how long the battery life is, the model of CPU it operates, the graphic cards, RAM, storage, and screen resolutions are only but a few of the many specifications you might need to consider. The lowest screen resolution you can come across should be that of 1366×768, but we usually recommend the higher 1920×1080 models. Some convertibles also come with the Quad HD resolution (2560×1400), while some others come with the Ultra HD, more commonly referred to as the 4K display (3840×2160) which is the highest resolution at the moment.

Moving on to storage, if you want to cut down costs you can go for the traditional hard disks. Up next to that, you have the Embedded Multimedia Cards (eMMC), SD cards, and finally the Solid State Drives (SSD). The CPU choice you opt for is also very necessary, as it greatly affects the general performance of the system, and so is the memory (RAM). If you do not carry out bulk tasks, you can go for the standard 4GB RAM, but if you handle more tasks and do not want your system to lag or slow down then, it’s advisable to go for a model with a larger RAM.

Concluding Thoughts

We trust that with all the vital and detailed information that has been provided in this article, it would be a lot easier for you to tailor your choices in the direction of the convertible laptop model that suits your needs.
