Best Wi-Fi Routers for Streaming and Gaming in 2020 Buying Guide

Your router plays a crucial role in integrating your electronics and household electrical components, and in the future they are going to play increasing roles with the evolution of IoT. You can be sure that buying a router that is future proof is a wise decision.

Also, as Wi-Fi standards keep evolving every few years, it is not a bad idea to change your Wi-Fi router every 3 to 5 years so as to be able to keep up with evolving technologies and protocols. Here’s a guide that should furnish you with all the information you need when selecting the best Wi-Fi routers for streaming and gaming in 2020.

Before we review the best Wi-Fi routers for streaming and gaming, let’s look at the major features to look out for when choosing a router.

Wi-Fi Naming Convention

The idea behind the 802.11xx naming convention is simply based on the premise that the higher the number, the faster or higher the network speed. Thus, 802.11a is the earliest, though products that support a came later than 802.11b. consequently, there was 802.11g, followed by n, then ac and presently ax. (see table below)

Wi-Fi Protocols & Speeds

Wi-Fi protocols are constantly evolving, being anchored on the IEEE transmission protocol. The latest and up to date routers are based on the 802.11ac, also dubbed 5G Wi-Fi. The current protocol is called Next-gen AC, or MU-MIMO (Multiple-User, Multiple input and Multiple Output). This protocol is just an improvement on the 802.11ac protocol, which allows the router to communicate more efficiently with the clients (More on MU-MIMO below).

Here’s a table showing the different Wi-Fi protocols.

WiFi Standard Networks Speed Frequency
WiFi 1 802.11b 11Mbps 2.4GHz
WiFi 2 802.11a 54Mbps 5GHz
WiFi 3 802.11g 50Mbps 2.4GHz
WiFi 4 802.11n 450Mbps 2.4GHz/5GHz
WiFi 5 802.11ac 1300Mbps 5.8GHz
WiFi 6 802.11ax 1700Mbps 2.4GHz/5GHz

When buying a router, look for either the Wi-Fi 6 or 802.11ac or ax specification.

Features of a Modern Router

Best Wi-Fi Routers for Streaming and Gaming

MU-MIMO

This allows the router to transmit simultaneously, instead of serially. This is a smart way modern routers maximize their capabilities and usefulness. With this technology, a router can sustain multiple devices pulling data from it at the same time, without timeouts or network lag.

BEAMFORMING

A router normally broadcasts the network signals over the whole coverage area. Enter beamforming, which allows the router to focus a signal beam onto a device, instead of the usual method of scattering the signal all over. This is a smart technique that allow routers to be more efficient.

OFDMA

Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access, or OFDMA, is a feature which allows the router to communicate with multiple devices simultaneously. What this means is that you can connect multiple clients to the router, and it will be able to serve network signal to all, at the same time, without delays or latency issues.

It’s one of the most important features to expect in the next generation of Wi-Fi standards, or 802.11ax. Look out for this feature when getting a new router.

QoS

Quality of Service is a new feature integrated into Wi-Fi 6 which enables your favorite devices connected to the Router to receive priority attention in terms of Wi-Fi traffic. The device with the higher priority will not experience connection issues or lagging, no matter how stretched thin the bandwidth is. It’s quite handy when managing your network.

For instance, you can assign a higher priority to your online gaming or video streaming on Hulu or Netflix, so that even if someone else is downloading a torrent with a tablet, your streaming is never interrupted or suffer lag, assuming it is a heavily congested network.

eSATA/USB

Some devices are equipped with additional eSATA or high-speed USB 3 ports for faster file transfer. This makes it possible to stream a media file from your router at much higher speeds, compared to using a regular computer to share files over the network. If you need this feature, look for routers that have these ports because not all routers have this feature.

Review of Best Wi-Fi Routers for Streaming and Gaming in 2020

We review 10 best Wi-Fi routers for streaming and gaming in 2020 based on a number of metrics. We look at ease of setup and installation, design, and the features. You’ll probably find your preferred brand here, no jokes.

Best Wi-Fi Routers for Streaming and Gaming in 2020

Ease of Setup

In terms of unboxing and setting up, users reported that the unit is quite easy to setup. Only thing is, you have to update the firmware in most cases, which will fix some issues you may notice after setup. Otherwise, most users found the setup experience seamless and effortless.

Design

This unit has a nice design which we’ve come to expect from modern routers. However, it’s quite bulky. This may not really be an issue since it’s going to be sitting in its place most of the time. The antennas are equally spaced apart for maximum transmission.

It’s also wall-mountable, and there’s an option to turn off the LEDs if you find it disruptive. Overall, the design is not bad.

There are a total of 8 high-gain antennas strategically located all around the device for maximum signal transmission, enabling it to operate the two bands.

Features

This unit is loaded with a host of useful features you should expect from a modern router, whether for gaming or streaming.  It does its job quite well when subjected to tests, with the unit being able to sustain up to 40 connected devices.

One of the features we like is the connectivity options, including USB 3 and eSATA. With these, you have more options to connect your portable devices and share them over the network. It’s MU-MIMO capable, which enables it to shoot data at insane speeds of up to 6Gbps.

Besides, it’s also equipped with cutting edge technologies including OFDMA, 160MHz Channel Support, and 1024 QAM for greater capacity, more efficiency and capability to handle more devices connected to it. In terms of convenience, you can connect an Alexa device and use voice commands.

In addition, you’ll also find the app support quite useful, integrated anti-virus and Smart power saving feature. Other useful features include Beamforming, Rangeboost, Content Filtering and QoS. With all these features, it is able to handle 8 streaming clients at a time without breaking sweat.

The AX6000 is kind of future-proof, as you’re going to really harness its full potential as more devices latch on to Wi-Fi 6. But for now, if you are a TP-Link fan, or want a good performer at a decent price, then consider this.

  • Plenty of Ethernet ports
  • Alexa compatible
  • Mobile App
  • USB
  • Lots of configuration options

NETGEAR Nighthawk AX12 12-Stream Wi-Fi 6 Router

The AX12 is a tri-band router with a host of capabilities. It is future-proof; with Wi-Fi 6 and has a slick design which will look good sitting on a table.

Best Wi-Fi Routers for Streaming and Gaming

Netgear has quite a reputation for making quality wireless hardware, and this model is no exception. What you get is a high-performance device that not only keeps you connected and shares the connection but also does it spectacularly.

Ease of Setup

You could have this thing unboxed and up-and-running in like 5 minutes. It’s that easy. In addition, it also has a new user interface for easy setup and configuration.

Design

We love the futuristic design. It’s cool. There are 8 high-powered antennas strategically situated inside the wings for maximum performance, no matter your location in the house or office. These ensure it is able to maintain tri-band frequencies of 1GHz, 2.4GHz and 5GHz effectively.

The Nighthawk AX12 rear view

Features

There are a host of features this device supports, including OFDMA, Smart Connect, Dynamic QoS, and voice support with Alexa and Google Voice Assistant. There’s also Beamforming, which allows the device to focus the signals in the direction of currently connected devices. This maximizes signal strength and connectivity.

The combined throughput of the Nighthawk AX12 is a whopping 11Gbps! This is the only device in this roundup with the highest capacity. It is also capable of 12 simultaneous streams at any point in time. This means that 12 devices can be streaming high-resolution video at the same time, without any lag or interruptions. Impressive.

The device supports MU-MIMO in addition to previous generation protocols. The coverage area is up to 2,500 square feet. When your guests come along, you can easily grant them access using the Guest Access feature which is quite convenient.

The device also has USB 3.0 ports for fast file sharing and transfer by connecting a capable USB 3 storage device. With the Nighthawk app that is tightly integrated, you can make use of the Parental Control feature which lets you manage device internet access and filter websites.

Let’s not forget the VPN and the integrated Firewall. All in all, this device doesn’t fall short in terms of features.

We think the AX12 is a great router, except for the price. Also, you can’t mount this thing on a wall. It’s just meant to sit in the corner for the rest of its life.

The AX12 gives you more speed, more capacity, and more useful features. Seriously, if money isn’t an issue, then you should consider this model by all means.

  • Backward-compatible
  • Slick design
  • Alexa + Google Assistant compatible

Best Wi-Fi Routers for Streaming and Gaming in 2020

Ease of Setup

Users have reported the absence of any problems with setting up this router. You should be up and running within 20 minutes of fiddling with the installation and setup through the GUI. You may also need to update the firmware through Linksys website.

Design

This device doesn’t look exceptional in design and aesthetics. We would say it scored average on that one. It would also mount on a wall, apart from sitting on a table. There are 3 high-gain antennas attached at the rear for wireless transmission of frequencies in the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands.

Features

Linksys claims this device is 4.4 times faster than other AC1750 devices. Well, this claim is ambitious, and as it is with such claims, we usually take it with a pinch of salt till we have run actual tests to confirm such claims.

For a start, this device is MU-MIMO ready, and is backwards compatible with previous Wi-Fi protocols. In terms of speed, this router is able to output up to 1.7Gbps with a coverage area of 1,500 square feet to up to 10 connected clients simultaneously. This means that at any point in time, it can sustain 10 connected devices without interruptions or timeouts.

There are 4 Ethernet ports for wired connections and a dedicated USB 3 port for attaching your portable storage devices. This helps in media sharing and fast file transfer.

You also have Parental Controls for monitoring what your kids are watching online and keeping things in check. Other useful features include Smart Wi-Fi which allows you to control your device from anywhere through the internet.

Even if you’re away from home or the office, use it to get real-time information about your home Wi-Fi network, send guests Wi-Fi passwords, prioritize your devices, and set parental controls, among other things. The free Smart Wi-Fi App is available as a download for compatible iOS or Android devices.

You can also prioritize your devices connected to the router through the Smart Wi-Fi app, allowing you to overcome bandwidth limitations and avoid lag by prioritizing devices that need the fastest Wi-Fi at any point in time.

The Guest Access feature is also handy for sharing your internet connection with your guests, even if you’re not around the house or office. There’s also an integrated Firewall to keep the bad guys out.

Another nice feature is the Network map, which gives you a visual representation of all connected devices. It’s quite convenient and helpful for monitoring your network.

This dual-band router gives you decent performance for the money, and you should check it out. We noticed that the device connection strength drops considerably at a distance of 35 feet. This is not too good because there are routers in this review that can sustain connections up to 300 feet. However, the choice is up to you.

You’ll realize that you can do much more with the app. Just download from the app store and log in. Upon registration of your device, everything else is peanut butter.

Design

The router has a simplistic design. We also love the fact that you can mount it on a wall. It is equipped with 4 high-gain antennas for maximized coverage. Being a dual-band router, it operates on the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands.

Features

Here’s a rundown of its major features. It supports MU-MIMO, allowing it to efficiently maintain connection to lots of devices at the same time. The combined speed is put at 1267 Mbps, and is able to cover up to Up to 1,500 square feet of space.

Furthermore, this device is also able to maintain connection to up to 30 clients, and there are up to 5 ports for wired Ethernet connections. With ASUS Smart Connect, this device is able to switch connection between the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands seamlessly for maximum bandwidth allocation and management.

The Asus Router App enables you to do more with your router; you can monitor the active connections, manage different aspects including granting Guest Access and scheduling. The Smart QoS feature also comes in handy for regulating access to your devices.

There’s also the Parental Control feature, VPN, and the dedicated USB 3 port for file sharing and streaming of your favorite movies over the network, from an attached storage device.

Apart from isolated complaints of drop-in connectivity, we have nothing against this solid performing router from Asus. Besides, it’s quite affordable. Check it out.

• Easy setup
• Lightweight

Best Wi-Fi Routers for Streaming and Gaming

Ease of Setup

It’s quite easy to install. The install guide that comes in the box is quite simplified with detailed graphics of the installation procedure. Installation shouldn’t take you more than 10 minutes, all things being equal.

Design

This router has a stylish design which looks quite cool sitting on a table. It has 4 antennas equally spaced apart. In addition, if you don’t like it sitting on a table, you can easily mount it on the wall using the provided mounting holes.

Features

This device is MU-MIMO compliant, and is also backwards compatible with the a/b/g/n/ac protocols. It can cover a maximum area of 3,500 square feet which is expandable with mesh system. You can easily achieve this by purchasing extenders if this cannot serve your needs.

It boasts a combined throughput of 2.5Gbps for a maximum of 25 connected users. In addition, there are 4 Ethernet ports to service your wired network connection for 4 devices. You also have 2 USB ports to connect your digital storage devices for streaming and file sharing.

Furthermore, you’ve got Beamforming which maximizes connection by focusing the signal to connected devices, instead of just beaming the signals all over the coverage area. There’s also the Smart Connect feature, QoS, Guest Connect, and the D-Link Wi-Fi Mesh.

The device also supports voice control as it integrates nicely with Amazon Alexa & Google Voice Assistant. However, one feature we found lacking in the device is the Parental Control feature.

  • Easy setup

NETGEAR Nighthawk X4S R7800 Smart Wi-Fi Router

The R7800 is one the Netgear routers featured in this roundup. As usual, Netgear’s reputation and culture of churning out quality products shines through in this mid-range router. It’s capable of pushing signals across its coverage area on all existing Wi-Fi protocols, including the MU-MIMO which is the Next-gen AC protocol.

Ease of Setup

The Nighthawk App makes it super-easy to set up your router. Connect your internet Ethernet cable to the router and the app will walk you through the simple setup steps. Once it is broadcasting, simply connect your devices to the network and you’re done. Everything should take roughly 5 minutes.

Design

Going by looks, this router looks geeky with its angular edges. However, looks alone don’t cut it. It’s powered by a 1.7GHz processor paired with 4 antennas for efficient transmission of data. There’s also provision to mount it on a wall, if you don’t like it sitting around, that is.

Features

The X4S is capable of outputting up to 2.6GHz on both bands, and has a coverage area of 2,500 square feet. In addition, it is able to sustain up to 45 maximum connections at a time. That’s remarkable.

There’s also 5 Ethernet ports for wired connections. You also get USB ports for attaching your portable storage devices. In addition, the Parental Control feature allows you to set limits for kids and also block out certain content which are undesirable.

Other useful features include Beamforming, Dynamic QoS, DoS, Guest Access and Double Firewall. There’s also Voice Control with Amazon Alexa which allows you to communicate through voice. Let’s not forget the handy and free Cloud Storage you get when you register the product.

Some of the things we didn’t like with this device are the poor 90-day warranty and the problematic admin interface. We’ve also heard reports of poor customer support from Netgear. The choice is yours anyways. These may not really be the case right now as these issues would have been resolved as of today.

Take your pick of the the best 24 inch Monitors for gaming, productivity, and every other thing you can think of…

Ease of Setup

To set this up, simply download the Tether app from the App Store or Google Play Store. The app will simply guide you through the installation effortlessly.

Design

The device looks sexy at first glance, with just 2 high-gain antennas poking out at the back. However, it falls short in terms of placement of the micro-USB power port and Ethernet ports are on different sides of the device which is not really nice because you have the cables coming out in different directions, not from one side of the device which is usually the back.

Another issue is the micro-USB port which is situated farther inside the unit. This presents problems because the cable cannot be securely connected as it falls out most of the time on its own.

Features

For starters, this device doesn’t support MU-MIMO protocol, but it does support the previous gen protocols. The combined throughput is rated at 1.2Gbps, and you can connect as much clients as possible. However, the bandwidth is subject to become overstretched.

The range of this device stretches as far as 300 feet without obstructions. There are 4 Ethernet ports for connecting your wired devices. However, there is a lack of USB or eSATA ports on the device.

The bandwidth control feature allows you to allocate more data for gaming or streaming. You can also use it to limit connection speeds per device. There’s also Guest Control for managing access to your guests by creating a separate network on the fly.

Other useful features include the Access Point mode which allows you to turn the device into a hotspot access point. There’s also the Access Schedule which allows you to schedule when the device should be accessible, the integrated SPI Firewall and DoS. There’s also Parental Control integrated.

Features we found lacking on the device include USB and eSATA ports, which means you can’t use this to share files or share videos over the network.

Overall, the Archer A5 is a really attractive budget router that does its job well enough, at a budget price point.

Amazon eero mesh Wi-Fi router

A recent addition to Amazon’s suite of digital lifestyle products, the Amazon eero mesh Wi-Fi router provides decent speed and connectivity at a decent price.
It integrates nicely with a mesh system that blankets your space with your network signal, allowing you to access the internet at half Gigabit network speed. Our review of the best Wi-Fi routers for streaming and gaming in 2020 will not be complete without this device.

Best Wi-Fi Routers for Streaming and Gaming in 2020

Ease of Setup

Setting up the eero is a piece of cake; simply download the eero app on Play Store or the App Store as the case may be, disconnect your modem and let the app guide you through. Everything should work out in 10 minutes or less.

Design

Well, when it comes to design, this device wins in all respects. It is obviously the best designed among all the routers in this review. It has a compact form factor, and you’d easily mistake it for a decorative piece of furniture, if not for the bold eero logo etched on top.

The absence of an external antenna suggests that the antenna is tucked neatly inside the device. well, for lack of words, the eero is quite simplistic in design, and also small enough to tuck inside your coverall pocket.

The device is powered by a lone USB Type C port, and there are 2 auto-sensing Gigabit Ethernet ports at the rear. The unit measures roughly 2.3 inches in height and 3.9 inches in width, and there’s a single LED status light.

Features

This baby is capable of shooting data at speeds up to 550 Mbps on both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands combined. As indicated above, it has 2 Ethernet ports and a lone USB Type C port for powering the device. The range of the eero is put at 1,500 square feet, and you can extend that by getting additional eero beacons to create a mesh network.

Eero supports MU-MIMO and all the previous generations of Wi-Fi protocols. It also supports Beamforming for more efficient signal management and network performance.

You can connect unlimited number of devices, but that isn’t a big deal because everything is gonna be restricted to 550Mbps. Per installation, this unit can only be placed on a table as there is no provision for mounting it on a wall.

Other useful features include threat scans, content warnings, and ad-blocking which enable for hassle free usage. However, you can subscribe to extra security features such as encryption and malware scanning for a fee.

Eero also supports voice commands by pairing it with an Alexa device for convenient voice control. Furthermore, with the eero app, you can monitor what’s happening on your network, check device usage, share your network with friends, or even pause the internet.

There’s also the lack of Parental Controls and Guest Access, a common feature with most of the devices in this roundup. There’s also lack of USB connectors and QoS, features which are standard on most devices.

Some users reported issues of compatibility with the AT&T U-verse system, but we found out that it’s just an issue of improper configuration. Otherwise, the eero works perfectly with U-verse.

Overall, this is a nice little router with good performance and if you like it, here’s a link to the Amazon product page. You can also grab an extender beacon using this link.

Google Nest Wi-Fi Router

The Google Nest Wi-Fi router is Google’s offering in the wireless hardware department. Mesh systems are becoming increasingly popular, being an upgrade to the router-repeater system. The Nest router is a stylish dual-band router which combines aesthetics and performance in one compact package.

Ease of Setup

Setup is quick and hassle free; just place the router in your preferred location, download the app and follow the instructions to setup your router. If you purchased the router and point, ensure you install the point at the desired location. The rest is easy and shouldn’t take more than 5 minutes for everything to work perfectly.

Design

Google adopted the minimalistic approach in the design of this Nest router. It is compact and measures just 4.3 inches in height and weighs a paltry 380 grams. There’s a single LED light in front view, and just two cables exiting through the rear, one for the power and the other from the modem.

There are no USB or eSATA ports, and no external antennas. This router could easily be mistaken for a piece of decorative artefact because there’s just a less obvious G branding on top of the device. Just plain and simple.

Features

The Nest Wi-Fi router may look simple and diminutive, but it also packs an array of features. This device supports the MU-MIMO protocol and is also backwards compatible with previous Wi-Fi protocols. It can output up to 700Mbps on both bands, and can support unlimited devices, thanks to the mesh system. However, a single router unit can support up to 100 clients at a time.

The coverage area is up to 2,200 square feet. You’ll also find 2 Gigabit Ethernet ports for connecting your wired devices.

The beauty of this device is its tight integration with Google Voice Assistant, which enables totally hands free and convenient use. With your voice, you can easily do a lot such as managing the network, switching devices and more.

There’s also smart Beamforming and Parental Controls. However, you won’t find USB ports on the device.

The Google Nest Wi-Fi router is a well-designed product for fast and secure internet for your home or office. For those of us that are concerned purely with aesthetics without sacrificing performance, this is a great option.

NETGEAR Nighthawk X10 Smart Wi-Fi Router

The Nighthawk X10 is Netgear’s flagship offering and we’re pleased to review it in this article. This device could easily clock number 1 on our list of best Wi-Fi routers for streaming and gaming if not for the price. But then, price aside, this is a solid and reliable product you should pay serious attention to.

Ease of Setup

It’s always a good idea to consult the documentation or manual that came with your device. This is because every manufacturer does things a little bit differently.

Setting up the X10 is quite easy and should take no more than 5 minutes. First of all, it’s a good idea to place the device in a central location if you own a large house. Connect it to the power and your PC, download the firmware upgrade and install. From there, everything else is a breeze.

The web interface will simply guide you through the setup steps remaining.

Design

In terms of design, this device doesn’t look any different from what we are used to. The front panel has a whole array of LED lights for just about any feature on the device, all the way from the power LED to the Guest Access LED. It gives you a firsthand indication of which features are turned on.

The rear of the device houses the Ethernet ports and power ports. The antennas are strategically placed with 2 at the rear and 2 others by the sides. 2 handy USB 3.0 ports populate one side of the device. The power button is also located at the back. The design is pretty straightforward and it will look good on the table.

Features

In terms of features, this device is loaded to the hilt. For a start, it is MU-MIMO compliant, and also accommodates previous Wi-Fi protocols. The 160 MHz channel support doubles Wi-Fi speeds to mobile devices, while Beamforming helps improve the efficiency of the signals.

It also supports Dynamic QoS which allows your preferred devices on the network receive priority attention for the best performance. the device also supports Amazon Alexa Voice which enables voice commands if paired with an Alexa device.

Being a tri-band router, this device is able to shoot data on the 1GHz, 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequencies quite well and reliably. At the heart of the device sits a 1.7GHz processor which enables faster data processing, which enables it to maintain a throughput of 7.2Gbps on all bands. This is impressive, and comes second to the X12, also featured in this review.

The X10 can cover up to 2500 square feet and can support up to 45 connected devices simultaneously. There is also a generous 6-port Ethernet switch for connecting wired devices. In addition, the device has 2 Bluetooth 3.0 ports through which you connect your storage devices for media sharing and streaming.

Furthermore, the Nighthawk mobile app comes in handy for easy setup of your router. It lets you manage Internet access by pausing and resuming internet instantly, running a speed test, all from your smartphone or tablet.

The X10 Plex media server allows you to share all your media content on the network by simply attaching a USB storage device to the high-speed USB 3 ports, giving you access to all your TV Show, movies, music and photo collections. Besides, you have 6 months free unlimited Amazon Cloud Storage which allows you to back up your precious digital memories.

The X10 is a great device in our opinion if you don’t mind the price tag. It is recommended for large households or offices and for those who truly require loads of features that a modern Wi-Fi router should provide. If you are using your router to manage a large number of devices while streaming video, using several computers, running a macOS server, a Plex server and an automated household, this is the router to get.

  • Easy setup
  • Voice enabled
  • Feature loaded

Conclusion

If you take your home network seriously, then you ought to take your router seriously too. The list of best Wi-Fi routers for streaming and gaming in 2020 won’t be complete if you don’t tell us what you think and what brand of Wi-Fi router you use.
