Google is shutting down its Google Photos photo subscription service, which is yet to kick off come July 1st. The product has been trialed since February 2020. This is according to a report on Droid Life.
The trial was billed to be replaced by an $8 per month subscription starting from July 1st, 2020. However, Google reached out to subscribers of its Google Photos subscription Service with information that the service will be scrapped from June 30th.
The email from Google reads in quote:
“Thank you for your invaluable feedback these last several months. You have provided us with a lot of helpful information about how we can evolve this feature, which we hope to make more widely available. Please keep your eyes open for future updates. Although we will be ending the trial program, we hope that you have experienced some joy from the prints you received along the way”
The company cited some issues which prompted the cancellation including the following
- The selection of photos to print is a hassle – you just don’t have the freedom to pick and print what you have. The app does it algorithm-selected automatically, which isn’t the best.
- Another limitation is that choice of photos to print is limited to Categories. You’d have to manually switch out selections which may contain images you really want to print. Awful.
- The cost is a bit on the high side, especially given the financial state of most subscribers following the COVID-19 aftermath. Similar street rates are quite lower than what the service offers.
Granted, a surprise selection of well-chosen photos is appealing, but this service wasn’t well thought out. In my opinion, it all right if the company leaves the Google Photos app as is, because this service is quite premature in its offering.
However, the cancellation of this service doesn’t affect other Google Photos print services, like its photo books. With the preponderance of smartphones and cloud storage, I’m kind of wondering whether it is still fashionable to print hard copies using services such as the Google Photos Subscription Service. We really hope that this service will be better revamped and repackaged in the near future.
